The first style of stained glass windows was the Gothic style. It began around 1000-1500 AD. It used to be a luxury to rich Romans. The making of stained glass windows comes from a book called 'Schedula Diversarum atrium' by monk Theophilus. Now It is considered art and the method is the same as then.
Antique Ciboriums are another classic item people relate to churches and cathedrals.
Around this time churches started using stained glass windows. A lot of the images were abstract. At this time the pieces of stained glass were as small as a hand making it look like a mosaic. Also at this time they could not choose the color they wanted. It had to be whichever color would come out of the furnace.
Two painters by the name of John La Farge and Louis Comfort Tiffany started to experiment with glass. Tiffany used a lot of detail and flowing designs, he made windows for both houses and churches. He took this concept and started making lamp shades due to the addition of electric lighting.
Today stained glass is considered and art. This is what we call a new golden age in glass. A lot of houses have stained glass in their bathrooms, walls, tables, and of course Tiffany style lampshades. This is an art and has changed since it started and will continue to do so. There will always be a new view and ideas. For more amazing works of art, see what Ajka glassware has to offer.
